Mexico Wins Gold Cup Title Number 9
Mexico extended its record number of CONCACAF Gold Cup titles to nine with a late dramatic triumph over Panama in the 2023 tournament final on Sunday, July 16 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. Substitute Santi Gimenez scored the winning goal in the 88th minute on an assist from Alexis Vega.
Both teams had chances in the second half, but it was Mexico that finally broke the deadlock in the final minutes. Jimenez was in the right place at the right time to tap in Vega's cross and send Mexico to victory.
The Gold Cup is the most prestigious international soccer tournament in North America, Central America and the Caribbean. Mexico is the most successful team in the tournament's history, having now won nine titles. Panama was making its first appearance in the Gold Cup final.
Mexico will now represent CONCACAF in the 2025 FIFA Confederations Cup.
